Eden Lodge’s Ashlyn Simmons was the queen of the Ryan Brathwaite Track with two record-breaking performances in the semi-finals of the National Primary Schools Athletics Championships (NAPSAC) at the Usain Bolt Sports Complex today.
While 10-year-old Simmons wrote her name in the NAPSAC record books, Charles F. Broome and St Angela’s won the day’s only finals in the Open Boys’ and Girls’ High Jump events, to take an early lead with 15 and 14 points respectively.
Simmons shattered Jaria Hoyte’s 2010 Open 600 metres record of 1:43.34 minutes with a new time of 1:42.78 minutes, finishing almost ten seconds clear of second place, Zakaiya Hunte of Charles F. Broome (1:52.01).
She returned to clock the fastest time of 1:03.59 minutes in the Under-13 Girls’ 400 metres before climaxing the day by anchoring Eden Lodge’s to a new medley relay record time of 2:00.97 minutes, with a blistering 400-metre last leg.
St Angela’s Jasmine Sealy cleared 1.32 metres to take the Under-13 Girls’ high jump gold medal. Celine Callender-Hurdle and Tanesha Arthur both cleared 1.29 metres to grab the silver and bronze medals.
Ramero Pinder sailed over the bar at 1.50 metres to win the Under-13 Boys’ high jump but failed to break Kemar Jones’ 2004 record of 1.53 metres.
St Cyprian’s Jayden Green took silver with a clearance of 1.39 metres and after running a sizzling 13.27 seconds in the Under-13 Boys’ 100 metres, will carry his new school title hopes, along with schoolmate Amari Forde (13.36) as they were the fastest finalists.
Green also had the fastest time of 26.95 seconds in the 200 and anchored St Cyprian’s medley race team with Forde running the 200 leg as they clocked the fastest time of 2:01.71 minutes.
