NORTH SOUND – Left-handed opener John Campbell smashed a six over long-off from the uncomplicated off-spin of Najmul Hossain Shanto to seal a seven-wicket win for West Indies over Bangladesh in the first Test yesterday in Antigua.

Campbell was unbeaten on 58 – his third half-century in 19 Tests – and compatriot Jermaine Blackwood was not out on 26, and the Windies needed a little under half-hour to complete their chase of 84 for victory to take a 1-0 lead in the two-Test series.

The two Jamaicans came to the rescue of the Caribbean side after they slumped to nine for three late on the previous day and they shared an unbroken 79 for the fourth wicket to take the hosts over the finish line at the Vivian Richards Cricket Ground (VRCG).

It was the third win in eight matches for West Indies in the ongoing edition of the ICC World Test Championship (WTC), and they earned 12 points that carried them to 42 – the fifth highest – in the standings.

They are, however, sixth in the race to qualify for the WTC final because the teams are ranked based on the percentage of points they have won, and the Windies have 43.75 percentage. (AR)
