For Minister of State in the Attorney General’s Office Corey Lane, the focus remains the same.

It’s all about crime prevention and finding a better life for the youth of Barbados.

That was the word yesterday from Lane, who has responsibility for Crime Prevention and is also Member of Parliament for The City, as he was putting things in place to speak to the families of the three men who died in one of this country’s most violent scenes in Nelson Street, Bridgetown, in the early hours of yesterday.

The three men were shot dead inside the Majestic Bar just before 2 a.m. According to police reports, three masked men entered and discharged multiple shots. Eight other people also suffered gunshot wounds.

Lane told the Sunday Sun he will concentrate on crime prevention and requisite programmes to help young people, while allowing the Barbados Police Service to fight crime and the Attorney General’s Office to bring legislation to deal with criminals.

Significant part

“My emotion today is one of sadness and regret,” he said about losing people

in the heart of his constituency. “We’ve started reducing these crimes to just statistics and I don’t want to do that. I sit with these families and talk to them. That is a significant part of what I have to do.”

He said that over the last two months, his main focus has been crime prevention and not the commission of crimes. “My theme the last few months has been more action and less talk. I will deal with crime prevention. The police will deal with fighting crime. The Attorney General will deal with legislation, as we all have our parts to play.”

He said that crime prevention must go on. “That is where I will keep my focus. I’m reaching out to the families involved in this most recent incident all this weekend. I like to go in and help support these young people. After the raw emotion wears down, there is a lot of pain being felt by these families.”
