Twenty-two animals seized and impounded at the Livestock Pound, Animal Nutrition Unit of the Ministry of Agriculture, were sold collectively for more than $4 000 during an auction at the Pine, St Michael facility yesterday.
Senior agriculture assistant and pound keeper Thomas Taylor, who described the event as a success, said he was surprised by the competitive bids for certain animals.
“We usually auction the animals in groups especially in the past when the numbers were high, but this was the first time single animals were sold for a high price.”
A total of 19 sheep, three pigs, a calf and a horse were up for offer. Only the horse was not sold.
Taylor said the sheep were seized in Bourne’s Village, St George; Haggatts, St Andrew; and Erdiston Teachers’ Training College, Strathclyde and Cave Hill, St Michael. The pigs were collected in St Lucy, the horse in Fairy Valley, Christ Church, and the calf in Reservoir Road, St Peter. (SB)
