The poultry industry in Barbados is eager to spread its wings internationally, but current legislation does not permit Barbados to export anything of animal origin outside of the region.

This, according to Geoffrey Goddard, general manager of Chickmont Foods Ltd, the largest poultry producer in Barbados, was hurting the industry.

Goddard said Barbados was losing out on much needed foreign exchange and the expansion of jobs in the sector because of this ongoing situation.

“We have been fighting this since 2002/2003 when the [World Trade Organisation] came into being,” he said. (MB)
