Not one public secondary school board of management has requested a beef-up in security, despite weapons being confiscated from students and violence in schools remaining a burning issue.
Minister of Education Santia Bradshaw made this announcement yesterday after the closing ceremony of World Skills Barbados Juniors held at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre.
Bradshaw explained that while tighter security measures were imposed at Frederick Smith Secondary School, such as the use of metal detectors and bag searches at the gates, after the stabbing death of Temario Holder there on November 8, no school indicated a need for increased security.
“All schools are not the same and I don’t think there should be a broad brush approach to every school,” she said. (SB)
