THE OLYMPICS OF Caribbean culture kicked off with colour, dance and “red devils” who scared the daylights out of spectators at Kensington Oval yesterday.
The much-anticipated opening ceremony of CARIFESTA XIII finally got under way yesterday – after being delayed by the passage of Tropical Storm Harvey last Friday – and turned out to be a potpourri of French, English and Spanish cultural expressions and music.
Delegations from those CARICOM member states which made it in after Harvey, as well as representatives from Guadeloupe, Martinique, the United States Virgin Islands and Venezuela, put on displays that celebrated the uniqueness of their culture and the commonality of a shared African heritage.
From the Red Devils in the Trinidad and Tobago contingent whose actions cleared swaths among the crowd on the field, to the Bermudians with their traditional African dancers garbed in distinctive head wear, the 1 500 delegates gave a taste of what patrons could expect in the next eight days. (HLE)
