BHTA to honour founders

THE HIGHLIGHT of the Barbados Hotel and Tourism Association’s (BHTA) 65th Anniversary Annual General Meeting (AGM) on June 14, at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre, will be the honouring of industry founders.

Minister of Tourism and International Transport Richard Sealy will deliver the feature address.

Chairman Roseanne Myers stated: “This year’s AGM and Awards will be a great celebration for us. Sixty-five years is a really long time for an organisation to be in existence and to be as vibrant as the BHTA has been and we really want to honour this.

“So to mark this special milestone we want to pay tribute to a number of persons who have made significant contributions to the Association and the industry, including our past Presidents, Life Time Achievers, Executive Directors and partners.

“Persons who have been founders and perhaps people have forgotten the contribution they made to pull the private sector together so that we could work hand in hand with the public sector in terms of making Barbados the destination that it has become; these are the persons we want to honour this year. We will also be paying tribute to the entertainment industry with a musical package to honour some of the artistes who have been associated with the industry over the years,” she added.

Myers said the BHTA’s thrust of advocating for its members has never changed and will continue to do so.

“The country is facing some very tough economic challenges and the BHTA wants to ensure that as an organisation we continue to help the Barbadian economy, the Barbadian citizen and our own businesses, as we try to build the kind of nation that we would want to work, play, enjoy and basically raise our children in.”

The business segment of the meeting will start at 3:30 p.m., and feature reports on the past year by Myers and CEO Rudy Grant. The election of officers to serve on the Board of Directors, including Chairman Elect, Second Vice Chairman, Director of Direct Tourism Services and Director of Finance, will also occur during this session.

The 65th Anniversary celebrations start on June 11 with a Service of Thanksgiving at the St Mary’s Anglican Church at 9 a.m. (PR/SAT)
