Grass, rubbish fires taking toll on firemen

GRASS AND RUBBISH fires are physically demanding on firefighters because of their unpredictable behaviour.

So says Andrew Taylor, of the Barbados Fire Service’s Research and Planning Unit, who told the WEEKEND NATION that so far for the year 371 grass and 126 rubbish fires had been reported. This is in comparison to the 329 grass and 119 rubbish fires reported for the same time last year.

However, Taylor said, there was no need to panic.

“Even though it’s dry season there could be rainfall almost every day or every other day so that helps to keep the grass fires at bay. But we haven’t had a lot of rain recently so that could be a cause of the increase in grass fires weekly,” he said. (TG)
