THE THICK BLACK SMOKE of a blazing house was no barrier to some members of a close-knit community who rushed in to save one of their own trapped inside yesterday.

As a result of the morning blaze at Bromefield No. 2, St Lucy, 59-year-old Nigel Corbin was hospitalised with burns about his body and one of his rescuers, road tennis player Kerry “TC” Francis, was also taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) and treated for a hand injury.

The smouldering remains of the wall house was all that remained after fire officers battled for about an hour to extinguish the blaze which started at around 10:30 a.m.

Nothing was saved and four other people were looking last night for alternative accommodation with relatives in the neighbourhood.
