DWAYNE GITTENS could soon be walking tall again, provided he raises the funds he needs.
The 32-year-old, who suffers from Blount’s disease (bow legs), said he had been on the Queen Elizabeth Hospital’s waiting list for 16 years for surgery to get his legs straightened.
However, after going public about the pain and suffering he has endured over the years, Gittens has finally found a doctor, orthopaedic surgeon Dr Randolph Carrington, to carry out the surgery.
But Gittens needs close to $40 000 to pay for the surgery and he is appealing to the public for help.
“The surgery is officially $33 000 but other costs are involved such as after care – therapy, medication, so we have decided to round it off at $40 000,” said Gittens who has been unable to work due to his condition. “I am hoping that Barbadians reach out and assist me.”
He has opened an account at Republic Bank and the account number is 022891091002.
“I want to say thanks to the MP for the City, Jeffrey Bostic, Dr Dion Johnson, the City Council of Bridgetown and all the people who have donated so far,” he said.
His mother Valerie Gittens is anxiously looking forward to seeing her son back on his feet again.
“I would be very glad for him to get the surgery. He has been waiting too many years. I want him to walk properly and get rid of all the pain he is in right now,” she said. (MB)
