SUGAR CANE FARMERS in Barbados are set to nearly double their cane production and sugar output in 2017 after a dismal crop last year.
With the crop season to start on Monday, farmers are upbeat and hoping the industry would bounce back from the challenges of drought and record low canes planted which had many Barbadians questioning the future of the industry.
Two years of drought dropped the sugar output for the years of 2014 to 2016 by approximately 64 per cent.
But the general manager of the Barbados Agricultural Management Corporation (BAMC), Leslie Parris, predicted this year’s production should outstrip last year’s output by at least 5 000 tonnes. (SB)
