Carifta break

IT SHOULD be easier for more Barbadians, especially women, to qualify for this year’s CARIFTA Games in Curacao in April.

That’s because most of the previously tough eligibility requirements have been lowered, but Olympian Seibert Straughn is warning the athletes to still aim to perform beyond the benchmarks.

The new standards were released by the Athletics Association of Barbados (AAB) last week and the rush to qualify started on Saturday at the Joseph Payne Memorial Classic at the National Stadium.

“The standards are just a guide for selection but the athletes should always aim for a consistent higher performance, beyond the standard, so that when they get to the Games, they will be very competitive and be in the mix-up for medals,” said Straughn. (EZS)
