FOR THE SECOND straight year the choir of The People’s Cathedral Primary School reigned supreme at the Junior Choir Festival Competition.
They beat out Bay Primary, Belmont Primary, Grantley Prescod Primary, Grazettes Primary, and St Angela’s Primary in the competition which formed part of the for the nation’s Golden Jubilee celebrations.
Grantley Prescod Primary held on to second place while Bay Primary and St Angela’s Primary shared third place.
The competition, which made its debut last year, is organised by Cortez Blackett who said it was aimed at having the children from the different schools come together in friendly rivalry and to help them develop self-esteem through their talents.
In addition to the competition, the participants also benefited from a workshop at held at the Black Rock Cultural Centre.
“Programmes such as this, I believe, can allow the children to develop a sense of pride and encourage them to participate in the positive things in life,” Blackett said.
The event was held at Queen’s College on November 26 in collaboration with the National Council of Parent-Teacher Associations whose president Shone Gibbs said, “Research shows that active involvement in music, arts and sports lends to well-rounded students.
“Concomitantly, there is the need to develop our youth to take the cultural industry forward as a plank in our economy with the potential of generating needed foreign exchange”. (LK)
