ANOTHER PUBLIC FIGURE has pointed to the growing waistlines of the island’s children.
In fact, chancellor of the University of the West Indies (UWI), Sir George Alleyne, has called the problem of childhood obesity one “of immense proportions”.
He was speaking during UWI’s morning graduation ceremony at the Cave Hill campus yesterday.
Stressing he was unapologetic for once again raising an issue he highlighted last year, Sir George admitted that Sir Trevor Hassell had also spoken to the issue.
“But,” he said, “the gravity of the problem merits repetition often and loudly. Barbadian children are getting fatter, storing up huge problems for themselves and for the state.” (HLE)
