A DESIRE to defy the odds and a determination not to be kept down by his detractors have been motivating factors for perennial Woodbine champion jockey Patrick Husbands.

Shortly after he was named among Barbados’ initial batch of 25 sports icons at the recent Evening with the Stars at the Hilton Barbados, Husbands urged young, local jockeys to stay focused and have discipline if they want to follow in his footsteps.

“At the end of the day actually, I would like to tell all the young riders of today, never let anybody pull you down. You got to make a name for yourself and keep focused and you will make it,” Husbands told NATION SPORT in an interview after the ceremony.

“Keep your head above water and show everybody who you are, and words and deeds will speak for themselves in the long run. At the end of the day, it is all discipline and respect,” noted Husbands, who this year celebrated his 3000th career win. (EZS)
