THERE WERE mixed fortunes for Barbados in the fourth round of games of the 42nd Chess Olympiad in Azerbaijan yesterday.

While the women’s team secured their first points with a 2-2 draw against Guam, the men’s side lost 2 1/2 – 1 1/2 to the lower ranked Libya.

Barbados, ranked 103 out of 180 men’s teams, earned draws from Martyn Del Castilho on board 2, Terry Farley on board 3 and Kemp Lynch on board 4, but Orlando Husbands, playing on board 1, lost to Abobker Elarb, a player with a slightly higher rating.

With Libya ranked at 118, Barbados would have been confident of scoring their second win at the Olympiad, but were unable to score a single victory on any of the four boards.  (HG)
