THE DECISION BY the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) to sack T20 captain Darren Sammy has not been well-received.
Sammy revealed in a video on social media that chairman of selectors Courtney Browne told him of the change in a very brief conversation. Online readers expressed anger, but not surprise, at the move. Many thought it took long in coming in light of remarks made by Sammy last April.
It was during the presentation ceremony at the ICC World T20 Championships in India where Sammy revealed they had not received the kind of support they expected from the Board, which became a motivating factor in their victory.
Henderson Yarde: Who does Browne think he is? Why would you and your fellow selectors change a captain after being successful in the T20 World Cup? Not only that but a man whose leadership led to two T20WC championships? Phew!
Linton Vickers: Disgusting and unprofessional by the WICB. Think they can just bully everyone around, but it’s no surprise. They were always gonna get him because of his outburst during the T20WC and that’s the price you pay for speaking the truth.
Raymond Jones: Performance, performance and performance. Sammy, Pollard, Bravo, Russell, Holder and Carols are all fighting for three spots in the team. If you going to select a non-performing captain then let the other players know selection is not based on performance.
Jay Anderson: This is ridiculous; the best West Indies captain of any team since Viv Richards. The winner of not only one but two T20 World Cups and you unceremoniously drop him because of poor form. Utter crap! He is being disciplined for the statements at the last World Cup, but if the WICB wants to discipline him, fine him. Then you want to replace him with who? Carlos Brathwaite? What has he done to deserve the captaincy? If it wasn’t for the World Cup heroics, Carlos would be fighting for a place on the team.
Donna Harewood: Thank you, Sammy for bringing the team together. That was no mean feat in the circumstances. Any sports psychologist would have been able to put the right value on that. But Browne is not a sports psychologist and probably didn’t seek an opinion. Let’s hope that they manage to keep it together without you as I’m sure you would wish them to do.
Unemployed and Frustrated: I expected this as there is no such thing as freedom of speech. I wish you well in all your future endeavours, you served us well.
Dav good: Well Darren after all you were just playing as a captain and good fielder. Recently your personal performance was minimal, both in batting and bowling. Note too, you don’t openly condemn your management and expect to be embraced. Human nature, my brother.
