CLASSIC CARS are fetching bigger bucks these days in Barbados.
This was evidenced at the recent classic cars exhibition, at Content in St Thomas, where an attractive 1937 Ford Coupe was auctioned on the spot for $50 000.
The curvy and distinctive-looking vehicle was previously owned by businessman Andrew Bynoe before going under the hammer of auctioneer George Edghill.
The salmon and black near-80-year-old car was among the star attractions at the show, at which more than 50 classic and retro vehicles were showcased during the event sponsored by Courtesy Garage and Sagicor General Insurance.
The exhibition also brought together members and cars from the Barbados Association of Classic Cars and the Retro & Classic Car Association – the two leading clubs here.
Several prizes were presented on the day and among those winning prizes were Dr Charles Edwards for Car Of The Show (a 1967 Honda Mark I convertible) and Ivan Hutson for the Most Original Car (a 1983 Subaru GLF).
Close to 600 automobile enthusiasts, motorsport fans and visitors were among those taken back in time during the exhibition, which also featured several vintage cars that were no longer in production.
Sagicor General used the occasion to promote its recently launched Key Protector Classic & Retro Motor Policy, and assistant vice-president of marketing Roger Spencer reported that there was a lot of interest among car owners and potential collectors.
Representative for Courtesy Garage, Phillip Bynoe, also the manager for Hyundai in Barbados, said his company was proud to support the show and partner with the organisers and Sagicor General in staging the event which was also a good educational outing for families. (BB)
