ALL ACCUSED GUNMEN SHOULD face the courts within a month of being charged.
The recommendation to fast-track the cases of firearm suspects has come from Catholic Bishop of Barbados Jason Gordon who has had a history of working with criminal gangs in his homeland of Trinidad and Tobago.
Speaking yesterday to members of the Chamber of Commerce & Industry (BCCI) at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre, the senior cleric said that even if a person was charged with wounding and had used an illegal gun, the gun possession matter should be an easier charge to adjudicate and should be dealt with first to get the gunman behind bars and quickly off the streets.
Addressing a number of social and economic matters facing the country, Gordon told the business people: “The Acting Commissioner of Police Tyrone Griffith has raised to the nation’s attention the challenge of illegal firearms on the streets; the rise in gun violence has become unacceptable.” (GE)
