BARBADOS finished third in the West Indies Cricket Board’s Women’s Twenty20 Championships after defeating Windward Islands by nine wickets in the consolation final on Monday.
Playing at Providence Stadium in Guyana, Barbados restricted Windwards to 98 for three and raced to the target for the loss of just one wicket in 10.5 overs.
Kycia Knight’s unbeaten 46 and Deandra Dottin’s 25 not out helped Barbados to victory after Shakera Selman sent down an economical spell of four overs in which she conceded 14 runs and grabbed two wickets.
Barbados had to settle for a place in the consolidation final after they were edged out by eventual champions Trinidad and Tobago in the zonal phase of the competition.
Both Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago finished Zone ‘A’ with six points from two victories in their three matches but the latter topped the group on account of having a higher net run-rate.
Barbados had defeated Trinidad and Tobago in their opening match by 32 runs on the back of a fine all-round performance by Hayley Matthews.
Matthews struck 27 in a total of 106 for eight and grabbed four wickets for 17 runs to help restrict Trinidad and Tobago to 74.
Barbados followed up with a second successive win against hosts Guyana, winning by 49 runs after Shaquana Quintyne’s unbeaten 56 off 43 balls guided them to 140 for six.
A narrow defeat in their third round match against Jamaica cost Barbados a place in the final.
Jamaica scored 126 for four but Barbados managed 123 for six with Quintyne scoring 34 and Kycia Knight 22. (HG)
