IN AN UNPRECEDENTED move, Barbados’ largest trade union has announced plans to enter the insurance market.
By September, the Barbados Workers’ Union (BWU) said, it intended to offer health coverage to its 25 000 members, with general secretary Toni Moore saying the union was concerned about lack of protection for many workers.
She said the move also sought to ensure that the BWU, registered in 1941, remained relevant.
“In less than two months, the Barbados Workers’ Union should be launching our health insurance. At a time when so many organisations are opting out, we are taking the bold step because we are an organisation of 75 years and growing and they’re saying that the viability of health insurance programmes depends on maintaining adequate numbers of young people into the programme,” Moore said.
