Special edition Akela T-shirt to aid Rio journey

SCORES OF Barbadians showed their support for multi-talented star athlete Akela Jones yesterday.

They visited Nation House, Fontabelle, to secure a special edition T-shirt, autographed by Jones in support of her road to the Olympic Games in Rio, Brazil, in August.

The initiative, coined by the Nation Publishing Company, was conceptualised as a means of ensuring her training and nutritional needs were met as she prepared for the summer games.

Among those supporting the initiative were lawyer Andrew Pilgrim, former president of the Barbados Netball Association, Olivia Gibson, Julie Phillips, physical education teacher at Springer Memorial, Jones’ alma mater, and professional physique competitor Maurice Arthur.

Jones has qualified for the Olympics in five different events ranging from the long jump, 100-metre hurdles and 200 metres,  but will only be competing in the high jump and heptathlon. (RG)
