FLIPPERS, BOTTLES, PLASTIC GLOVES with red dye on them, even a large beach towel filled with broken and dead pieces of coral were pulled from the seabed yesterday.
The discoveries came as dive operators, the Coastal Zone Management Unit (CZMU) and the Barbados chapter of the Caribbean Youth Environment Network teamed up for a marine clean-up of the waters off Folkestone Marine Reserve just outside Holetown, St James, yesterday morning.
In the wake of those discoveries, CZMU research officer Sadie-Ann Sisnett wants Barbadians to take responsibility for their garbage.
Sisnett said the unit was targeting areas frequented by catamarans and divers.
“You would get a lot of garbage coming off the catamaran and a lot of the garbage coming off the beach as well when the litter gets blown into the water,” she said. (HLE)
