THE BARBADOS UNION of Teachers (BUT) could be headed to court to fight salary deductions of members who attended union meetings on April 29 and May 4 this year.

President Pedro Shepherd said the legal team was on standby to pursue the case, if a meeting with permanent secretary in the Ministry of Education June Chandler at 3:30 p.m. today does not result in the letters sent to teachers about the “proportionate abatements” being withdrawn, and the monies returned to members.

He told the NATION two separate pieces of correspondence from lawyer Cecil McCarthy indicated that the deductions, which were close to $350 in some cases, were illegal. Teachers in the primary schools were reportedly docked a full day’s pay, while their counterparts in the secondary schools were hit for two full days. (YB)
