THE PROBING EYES of the Department of Commerce as well as the Barbados Investment and Development Corporation (BIDC) will be trained on unscrupulous manufacturers from tomorrow.

And the minister who has responsibility for commerce and industry is promising the two entities will launch a full investigation into information that some local manufacturers are removing labels from imported items and passing them off as being made in Barbados.

Minister Donville Inniss was responding to executive director of the Barbados Manufacturers’ Association (BMA), Bobbi McKay’s revelation at Friday’s opening of the island’s premier trade expo, BMEX.

McKay drew the “re-emerging trend” to Inniss’ attention and described it as a “subculture” in the manufacturing sector. She said the BMA would be going all out to stamp out the practice since it was difficult for locally manufactured products to compete with fake local goods.
