Springer school hit by dust problem

ANOTHER school has been hit by environmental problems, resulting in a number of students getting an early holiday.

This time it is the Government Hill, St Michael-based Springer Memorial School, where the first and second formers have been sent home because they were reportedly being affected by dust emanating from construction of a Barbados Water Authority (BWA) reservoir nearby.

President of the Barbados Secondary Teachers’ Union, Mary Redman, is urging the Ministry of Education to be proactive when dealing with the many problems plaguing schools in light of the recent closure to Combermere and Lawrence T. Gay Memorial schools because of environmental problems.

“It is ridiculous to consider that people would have considered doing that type of work next to a school during school time,” said Redman, in reaction to the development at Springer.
