Youth trials are back

LOCAL CRICKET won’t be stranding its youth teams at the crease again.

The Barbados Cricket Association (BCA) is ensuring the country’s poor performances at last year’s regional junior tournaments are a thing of the past. It has launched a new youth programme, starting with the reintroduction of trial matches from this weekend.

“Last year we had a real down season where we didn’t even place high in any of the competitions, so I think the first priority of the selectors is to get three good squads, and we’ve already put plans in place as we want to win all three competitions,” reasoned chairman of selectors Elvis Howard ahead of tomorrow’s Under-17 50-over trial match at Kensington Oval.

“I figured that last year one of the problems was that we were very, very short on preparation and the board has seen it fit to give us the machinery from early. The boys were practising in the Centre of Excellence from around September last year and we’re into the second phase of that component.
