REVENGE DOESN’T COME much sweeter than that.

Charles Vanderpool scored the game-winning lay-up on a last-second inbound play, as Orange 3 Pinelands stole Thursday’s wild 62-61 win over defending Co-operators General Insurance Premier League basketball champs Pan American International Insurance Warrens at the Wildey Gym.

It was sweet payback for last season’s debacle of a title series, where the Pine meekly handed over the league championship in what proved a very lopsided match-up. They very nearly lost this contest, too, having surrendered a five-point lead when Adrian Allman found Andre “Frankie” Pierre underneath for the go-ahead score 3.8 seconds remaining.

But Warrens gave up an even more heart-breaking lay-up, having overreacted to Jeremy Gill coming off a Vanderpool screen to leave the rolling big man free for an uncontested basket on the ensuing inbounds pass.
