CHRISTIANS in Barbados joined millions around the world yesterday in the observance of Ash Wednesday, the day that marks the beginning of the solemn season of Lent.
Congregations received the traditional cross of ashes on their foreheads, a reminder of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ centuries ago. The ashes used are the burnt residue of palm crosses distributed in churches on Palm Sunday.
During one of four services held at the Cathedral of St Michael’s and All Angels in Bridgetown yesterday, Anglican Bishop Dr John Holder said: “The season of Lent calls us to engage in a process of self-examination in order to discover what are the attitudes and the actions that need improving, overhauling or rejecting.”
Holder said the six weeks of Lent presented an opportunity for Christiansto take their attention away from the many electronic gadgets.
