Phrase ‘not said to offend’

COOL YOURSELF, Bizzy.

The phrase “freest black country in the world” was not meant to offend you or other Barbadians of your race.

It was just a reflection of what black Barbadians endured in times as recent as the 1950s.

This was the response from eminent historian and retired vice-principal of the Cave Hill Campus of the University of West, Professor Pedro Welch.

He was delivering the Democratic Labour Party’s weekly lunch-time lecture at party headquarters at George Street, St Michael, yesterday.

Williams, in the wake of the January 6 gala to launch the celebrations for the island’s 50th anniversary of Independence, said he felt slighted and crushed after watching a video presentation which he felt did not recognise the contribution of Whites to the island’s growth and stability in the pre- and post-Independence years.
