De Souza: Economy looking up

BARBADIANS FACED “some difficult times” and had to “eat the austerity pills”, but “things are starting to look good” for the economy.

Republic Bank Barbados managing director and chief executive officer Ian De Souza shared this upbeat forecast with guests attending the bank’s annual media mingle at his Villa Rosa, Royal Westmoreland, St James residence on Monday night.

While pointing to the verbal blows he said were inflicted by some individuals who did not agree with his similar positive outlook at last year’s reception, the senior banker said more people were now singing the same tune.

“Last year I made some comments that were considered to be very upbeat . . . about the Barbados economy. I said that we expected a bit of a turn as we got into late 2015 and as we got into late 2015 even THE NATION editorial one day started to say ‘but things really seem to be turning’. That is after people beat me up for being positive about the economy,” he quipped.
