THERE SHOULD BE no issue with a member of a political party offering constructive criticism of his or her leader.
However, there are rules against going overboard and it comes down to a matter of personal choice.
Attorney General Adriel Brathwaite and Speaker of the House of Assembly Michael Carrington spoke to the media on the issue before a St Michael West branch meeting on Sunday evening at St Leonard’s Boys’ School.
“The convention is, if you are in Cabinet, no. If you are a member of Cabinet, you cannot criticise a decision made in Cabinet, but if you are on the back bench, there is some latitude in terms of your ability to express your views. I think overall it is a question of what’s healthy for the party in terms of the nature of the criticism,” said Brathwaite.
The matter has arisen in light of Christ Church West MP Dr Maria Agard’s recent expulsion from the Barbados Labour Party over what her party deemed negative public comments about its leadership. (CA)
