IT WAS AN UPSET of epic proportions when Sheldene Walrond defeated road tennis queen Kim Holder in the women’s final of the Massy United Insurance Clash of the Titans on Sunday night at the Netball Stadium.
The highly focused Walrond defeated Holder 21-18, 17-21, 21-16 in an exciting match in front of hundreds of spectators. Holder had not been beaten since 2007.
Walrond was in firm control of the first set and easily won 21-18. But Holder has not reigned for so long to give up her crown without a fight. She came out blazing in the second set, leaving Walrond flat-footed at times with vicious forehand smashes.
This was the Holder fans had come to see and she did not disappoint. She led 16-9 at one stage and despite an attempted comeback by Walrond, held on to win that second set 17-21. (PG)
