FOUR LOCAL POLITICIANS have been chosen as champions for the drive towards the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 5 which deals with gender equality.
Senator Irene Sandiford-Garner of the ruling Democratic Labour Party (DLP) and Parliamentary Representative for St Thomas Cynthia Forde of the Barbados Labour Party (BLP) were on hand to sign the agreement at the Bureau of Gender Affairs, and have their orange ribbon pinned during a Press conference this morning. The other two are Minister of Finance Chris Sinckler (DLP) and Senator Wilfred Abrahams of the BLP.
The drive is being spearheaded by the Caribbean Policy Development Centre in partnership with UN Women and the Institute for Gender and Development Studies. Several other gender-based organisations are also on board.
Each of the four champions is expected to use his or her office and other affiliations to ensure that gender equality is always at the forefront and to persuade colleagues to do likewise. (YB)
