MARK LOWE is the new Michael Forde National Rapid Chess champion. He did this by accumulating three-and- a-half points from a possible five in a keenly contested tournament over the Independence weekend.
Lowe finished ahead of veteran Othneil Harewood on a tiebreak after both players ended on the same points, but because Lowe had earlier defeated Harewood in their head-to-head clash, he was deemed to be the winner.
The rapid, in which each player has 30 minutes on their clock to complete the game, was played over two days and Lowe was a clear leader after the first day with three wins.
