Jones: Why keep corporal punishment?

DON’T THINK Minister of Education Ronald Jones is not listening to the debate on whether to retain or remove corporal punishment in schools.

In fact, his take on the issue is: why keep it on the books if it is not being used?

But, said Jones, its retention or removal from the Education Act was at least a year away since that was when any new legislation would come into being.

Jones, who was speaking to the MIDWEEK NATION yesterday as the debate about whether to beat errant children in schools raged, said he could not say whether his ministry would be following Attorney General’s Adriel Brathwaite’s lead. Brathwaite indicated he was looking to remove corporal punishment from the Juvenile Offenders Act. (HLE)
