ST JAMES, Jamaica – Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) Leader Andrew Holness is urging uncommitted voters to seriously consider whose hands they are leaving their fate in, if they decide not to participate in the democratic process.
“Quite likely, (it is) someone who is not concerned about the good governance of the country, someone who is mired in corruption with inefficiency and no growth as long as they are getting a little something for themselves. They are the ones voting for you, while you sit down, watching a leader with no vision carry this country down the path of destruction,” Holness stated.
He was speaking Sunday at a JLP mass meeting in Granville, St James.
According to the JLP leader, many Jamaicans who say they will vote for the JLP, say they believe the party is better at governance and managing the economy, and believe in progress and wealth creation.
However, he added that the polls also show that of those Jamaicans who participated in the poll, 60 per cent do not vote on issues but on the basis of their political alignment.
“Those who say they will vote for the PNP, say they do so because they are PNP and for no other reason,” he added.
“This means that if we have a bad government, that government will remain because those who are voting do not care about the performance of the government, as long as their party is in power,” Holness said.
He said many Jamaicans are not committed to any political party and are frustrated, and that they, therefore, withhold their vote in protest. But, he said that these very Jamaicans are committed to good governance and should carefully consider the consequences of not voting. (Observer)
