THIS PAST WEEK was one for the palm readers and those who study the horoscopes. It was all about numbers, especially who has the numbers, since that could determine the state of play. It was about whether the woman in white has a majority or whether the Jefferson lookalike has the odd ball.
People were lining up the numbers to try to predict who can depend on whom when things come to a head. The woman in white has the undivided support of the Miss Scarves, Miss Twiggy, Mr Mumble, The Comrade, and Marching Boots. The Jefferson lookalike team can count on the Smiling fellow always seen in St Joseph, Mount Hill Man and the tall fellow who is always running up and down Grazettes and Eden Lodge in hard shoes.
But there is uncertainty as to where Hardwork stands; as he once let down the short man from Mile & Quarter during a critical time. Then there is The Prince who sees himself as the rightful successor. Meanwhile, a Dr Doolittle, a real numerologist, is in the background throwing a curve ball. So, as the uncertainty continues, the real deal now is to try and sway the numbers, up or down.
Bookies are open to bets, as the race is going from the Garrison all through St Matthias, Dayrells Road, Marine and Navy Garden, through Bonnetts, through Forde’s Road before ending at Sargeant’s Village. The woman, who is always looking to see if people smiling have got pearly whites, is already on the route with her binoculars ensuring that no hanky panky takes place.
Queen-sized warning
A MAN WHO WANTS to win the affection of some people, both friends and opponents, above Oistins is being given a warning. This is a team sport and he will need to have a united front to project the best possible image, especially since the gladiator he faces is battle-hardened and fit, especially after years of going into overtime while playing football at Wotton.
The aspiring warrior was told to ensure that the queen of his household quickly understands what is meant by the common touch. She must understand the importance of speaking to the marish and the parish and mixing with the people who have not risen from the ashes as well as those in the ivory towers, whether in Bridgetown or Collymore Rock.
As somebody who likes to talk about “up and on”, he had better understand the ground rules early and realise that this is not the time to be snooty as if he was dealing with people steeped in talking about the only science which is far from exact.
Above it all
HAVE YOU BEEN to the doctor’s new showpiece on the hill past the sprawling place once owned by the fellow with jheri-curls from The City?
Well, the doctor has invited a brother from the fatherland to run things up on the hill which commands a spectacular view of the west and the north.
The other eye-catching thing is the number of security personnel, as if the country’s national treasures were being stored therein. There’s one to let you in, another to show you the door and one to tell you where to sit down. Yet, if you get to the doctor’s mansion 15 minutes before his workers leave for the day, they will show you some very sour faces. The doctor should remind them that they are there to collect his fees.
Show them the exit
THE STEPS HAVE BEEN REPAIRED, there is now more than one exit but still the building remains condemned.
So those who are hewers of wood and drawers of water who record daily what happens with the silent one and all his minions want to get out of the building despite the nice ocean front view and good sea breezes by the Esplanade. They want to go up Two Mile Hill to enjoy the comforts of Chinese labour.
In the meantime, they have suggested to the two City church leaders that they ensure the vehicles are always filled with petrol before the end of the day so that all events are properly recorded.
