THE BARBADOS RED CROSS says its Dominica storm relief appeal has raised nearly $130 000.
In a release over the weekend, director general Edmond Bradshaw said the money – $129 500 – would be combined with that raised by the International Federation of the Red Cross, which was working with the Dominica Red Cross in the relief and restoration efforts in Dominica after Tropical Storm Erika struck on August 27.
He added that the International Federation of the Red Cross had launched an international appeal to raise the equivalent of US$900 000 (BDS$1.8 million).
The release added: “To date, that international Red Cross appeal has raised more than US$1/2 million, including US$100 000 from the Swedish government and 50 000 Euros from the Italian government. The Red Cross work in Dominica is now into the reconstruction phase which will continue till March 2016.”
The Red Cross will aid those moving into the homes being built with the assistance of the Venezuela government. It will provide table top stoves, beds, linens, kitchen kits, cleaning kits and other items. Most of these people are from the Dubique and Petite Savanne areas. (BW/PR)
