AS THE ISLAND records an increase in the number of child abuse cases this year, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has been drafted in to help the controversy-plagued Child Care Board.
This was revealed by Minister of Social Care Steve Blackett, under whose portfolio the Child Care Board falls.
His comments came as the island marked the 25th anniversary of the island’s ratification of the United Nations Convention On The Rights Of The Child yesterday.
At a service at St George Parish Church, attended by Minister of Labour Dr Esther Byer, chairperson of the National Committee for Monitoring the Rights of the Child, Faith Marshall-Harris, and employees of the Ministry of Social Care, Blackett said the latest statistics from the Child Care Board “reveal many of our children have been abused in Barbados over the past year”.
