OVER 400 DIVERS have been granted licences to harvest sea eggs for today’s re-opening of the season after a five-year ban.
Officials at the Ministry of Fisheries have described the response as overwhelming, after announcing last week that harvesting of the sea urchin, a delicacy on Barbadian tables over the past years, would be allowed from October 1 to 30.
“We just couldn’t imagine that so many people have an interest in the harvesting of sea eggs. It will however give us an opportunity to expand our database and make it easier for us to manage,” a senior official told the DAILY NATION yesterday.
From as early as 5 a.m. today, a number of popular beaches and coastline spots will be a hive of activity as divers and vendors attempt to capitalise on the four-week open season.
