THE SIRENS were silent, but there was a buzz within the environs of the Barbados Fire Service’s Probyn Street headquarters, as it prepared to welcome visitors for an open day.
The firefighters are celebrating their diamond anniversary with a week of activities, including yesterday’s health and safety extravaganza at the Bridgetown station.
Acting Chief Fire Officer Errol Maynard was on deck in the control room monitoring the system, routing calls to appliances to go to the scene of a fire.
“I believe if I am asking my men to do a job, I should be able to work alongside them when the need arises,” he said.
Students from the nearby St Ambrose Primary School also got an insight into fire-fighting, in addition to trying on some of the outfits.
