FOR ANY BARBADIAN who fits the bill, it can be a case of a Christmas bonus coming in September.

Thousands of dollars may be waiting for a Bajan or two to collect from City Hall in Manhattan.

Stated simply, almost US$4 million is in New York City’s coffers, ready for distribution to the victims of wage theft by employers who cheated their workers employed on projects funded by City agencies. The trouble is many immigrants aren’t aware of the windfall. And that’s where Bajans may come in.

“Thousands of hard-working individuals, many of whom are immigrants, have been cheated out of their rightfully earned wages, but they may not know these funds exist,” explained Scott Stringer, New York City’s Comptroller, the chief fiscal watchdog, whose counterpart in Barbados is the Auditor-General.
