THE HEAD OF THE Barbados Private Sector Association says the island needs to keep a close eye on today’s general election in Trinidad and Tobago.

Chairman Alex McDonald said the results of the run-off between the incumbent Kamla Persad-Bissessar-led People’s Partnership coalition and the People’s National Movement (PNM) steered by Dr Keith Rowley, could determine whether there would be a shift in focus for businesses based in Port-of-Spain.

During a panel discussion yesterday on Sunday Brass Tacks on Starcom Network, McDonald pointed to the contracting Trinidad and Tobago economy that was heavily reliant on oil and gas, saying a change in fiscal and monetary policy could result in more focus on “home drums beating first”.

“If there is the perception that the Barbados economy will not do well and if there is a perception in the boardrooms that it will not do well in the next three years or two years or year, and the Trinidadian economy is sliding, then we’ll have to wait to tell what the reactions will be,” he said.
