NINETY-EIGHT PER CENT of the cases involving physical and sexual abuse of children are committed by family members and close associates.

This was revealed by chairman of the Child Care Board (CCB), Ken Knight, who also indicated that in the majority of cases, the boyfriend of the mother was responsible for sexually abusing the child.

“That is a common threat that we see,” said Knight, who was giving the DAILY NATION an overview of the many cases dealt with by the CCB, in light of the public criticisms the agency has faced following the death a week ago of six-year-old Jahan King, whose case was being investigated by the agency at the time he died.

And for the first time since the death in May of 12-year-old Shemar Weekes in unclear circumstances, Knight has confirmed that contact was made with the CCB in respect of the boy about two years ago. That case has been turned over to the coroner for a determination. (MB)
