Top female boxer Kimberly Gittens didn’t only capture a bronze medal at the seventh CISM Military World Games in Wuhan, China, but made history for Barbados while doing so.

It was the first time since Rome’s 1995 inaugural staging that female boxing was given a space at the championship.

“This is the first time that female boxing has been introduced to this particular games and that is history for Barbados to actually have an athlete for female boxing in its inception.

“Being a participant alone was ground-breaking and I kept repeating we write our name in history’s page [words of the National Anthem] and that is exactly what I’m doing,” she told NATION SPORT during an interview yesterday following her return on Tuesday. (RG)
