THE Mount Gay/Banks May Regatta will go down in history for the small number of competitors, but will be remembered for the fun and keen rivalry between the crews of the 14 boats that took part in the recent three-day event.
In the end, it was the crew of Impulse, captained by Neil Burke, that sailed away with the top honours in the exciting competition with ten points.
Executive officer of the Barbados Sailing Association Penny McIntyre told NATION SPORT that despite the relatively low entries, the event was of an extremely high level.
“The first day it was fantastic. We had winds gusting up to 34 knots that provided still challenges for the sailors. We had a few knock-downs but without any injuries. Esperanza was the first casuality after losing her halyard. Next was Hawkeye, which broke a rudder and had to rescued and towed back to shore while their other teammates continued battling the strong winds,” McIntyre noted.
