Former West Indies Under-19 cricketer Javon Searles suspended by ICC

0

Javon Searles, the former Barbados and West Indies Under 19 cricketer, has been named among three persons suspended by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for alleged breaches of anti-corruption regulations.

The others charged are Trevon Griffith, the former Guyana batsman, and Chitranjan Rathod, a “team official”.

In a statement, the ICC indicated that the charges pertain to the 2024 Bim10 Tournament, which is governed by the anti-corruption code of Cricket West Indies (CWI).

Additionally, Griffith faces an extra charge related to international matches under the ICC’s anti-corruption code.

The 39-year-old Searles, played four matches for KKR in the IPL 2018. He also represented Trinbago Knight Riders in the Caribbean Premier League between 2014 and 2019. Searles was a standout allrounder for West Indies at the Under-19 level.

He was also an excellent junior footballer and represented Barbados at several tournaments as a centre striker. He played professional cricket and football in England.

According to the ICC, Rathod faces three charges under the CWI code, while Searles has four charges against him. Griffith is charged with four offences under the CWI code and one under the ICC code. They have until March 11 to respond to the charges.

The trio is accused of fixing or attempting to improperly influence the result, progress, or conduct of matches during the Bim10 tournament.

They are also charged with soliciting or encouraging players or support personnel to commit anti-corruption offences and failing or refusing to cooperate with an official investigation. (PS)

Call to improve mapping systems

0

CARICOM countries are being called on to strengthen data systems that will help map urban and rural areas and track and estimate the population density.

The call came at the opening of the five-day workshop on regional population modelling, small-area population estimates and application of the degree of urbanisation (DEGURBA) held on Monday at the Indigo Hotel in Hastings, Christ Church.

Making his remarks via video call, CARICOM Deputy General Secretary Dr Armstrong Alexis highlighted the need for mapping urban and rural areas, noting that this population data helps identify vulnerable communities, address inequalities, assess infrastructure and improve responses during emergency scenarios.

“For many years, CARICOM has grappled with appropriately defining the rural/urban divide. The absence of a standard common scientific definition and methodology has left us with a critical gap, thus leading countries to develop and apply their own national definitions, many of which were not always scientifically grounded and varied significantly from each other.

“They improve the precision and availability of substantial data, help identify high-risk areas, and support targeted responses to inequalities, especially for populations in remote, coastal, lowlying or disaster-prone communities,” he said.

Armstrong explained that the De Gover methodology used by the United Nations Statistical Commission provided a scientifically sound, comparable statistical framework for classifying cities, towns, semi-dense areas and rural areas, strengthening geospatial data analysis and supporting national and regional planning.

Indicators

Additionally, he noted that the global indicator framework for the Sustainable Development Goals placed strong emphasis on geographic disaggregation and urban/rural classification and other substantial levels as

a minimum standard, particularly for indicators of poverty, education, health, water and sanitation and infrastructure.

Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Development Jennifer Hunte said the workshop connected to national policies and development plans in play in Barbados, such as the Barbados National Population Policy (2023-2040) as well as the Barbados Physical Development Plan.

She added that with the frequency and intensity of weather events, ageing population and shrinking labour force, it is crucial to rethink the approach to physical development.

Development needs

“Across the Caribbean and globally, policymakers are increasingly confronted with complex questions about population distribution, urban growth, and development needs. Yet, traditional definitions of urban and rural have often differed from country to country, making it very difficult to compare trends or design policies that effectively respond to the realities of our communities.

“The development of the degree of urbanisation, the DEGURBA methodology, provides an important step towards harmonising how we understand and measure settlement patterns, allowing our countries to produce more comparable and relevant data,” Hunte said. (JRN)

Port to expand

0

Plans are being developed for a new purpose-built cruise facility at the Bridgetown Port and it could involve investment from major cruise lines.

Barbados Port Inc. chief executive officer David Jean-Marie, responding to a question from Government backbencher Dr William Duguid, reported yesterday that “we have been examining few options with respect to building out of cruise facilities”.

“In terms of the existing facilities, we’ve enhanced the home port terminal. We have a luxury section there for home porting passengers. We continue to work on improving the existing terminal and it actually works.

“But we want to move towards separating cargo from cruise and we are indeed having a discussion with . . . the major cruise lines – MSC, Royal Caribbean, [and] Carnival – to see how they can participate as investors in the buildout of a purpose-built facility to the south of the existing terminal,” he said during the Appropriation Bill, 2026 debate.

Jean-Marie added that “the current configuration that we are looking at is reclamation of five acres of land, one pier initially, and a terminal”. “So we continue to have those conversations with the cruise lines and other entities that have expressed an interest to see how we can accelerate coming up with a plan as quickly as possible

to be able to build out facilities for the cruise passengers,” he said.

Minister of Tourism and International Transport Ian Gooding-Edghill also noted that “Barbados continues to grow and build out its cruise infrastructure . . . as part of the Bridgetown Port expansion.

“Berth 6 has been completed. We are currently receiving cargo vessels there and also some cruise ship vessels,” he said.

“We’ve always been plagued with the problem, prior to Berth 6, in Barbados, where there’s always competition for cruise ships and cargo ships to come in to dock and to obviously utilise the berthing space.

“Of course, as we continue to build out our cruise facilities, attention will have to be given now to the expansion of a . . . pier or two at the Bridgetown Port. This is absolutely necessary based on the demand that we are seeing and . . . the number of requests that we are getting from the cruise operators.” (SC)

Homeland security minister says US providing names of people linked to illegal drugs trade

0

Homeland Security Minister, Roger Alexander, says the United States has provided Trinidad and Tobago with a list of “persons of interest” in the country linked to illegal drugs, guns and violence.

Alexander told the Express newspaper that while he could not divulge many details for national security reasons , he wanted to underscore the importance of the support the US is  providing to Trinidad and Tobago.

He told the newspaper that people were commenting without understanding the significance of Trinidad and Tobago becoming a signatory to the Americas Counter Cartel Coalition, which is designed to coordinate intelligence sharing, law enforcement and military operations among participating countries.

The coalition is an initiative of US President Donald Trump and apart from Trinidad and Tobago, the only other Caribbean country that is a signatory is Guyana. The other countries are from 17 Latin America.

“I support this move as the Homeland Security Minister, so much so that when it happened, I was moved, totally moved, because when you look at it, this is something completely different. And it’s an initiative that could only happen under the current government led by Kamla Persad-Bissessar,” he said, adding that  the US gathers a “massive amount” of intelligence on countries, organisations and individuals.

“And they know exactly who they can work with and who they can trust with respect to their security efforts and combating cartels and narco-traffickers,” he said.

Alexander said the US has expressed confidence in working with the T&T Government and

The US has carried out a number of kinetic strikes on alleged drug boats in the region since September 2025, killing more than a 100 people, including nationals from Trinidad and Tobago  and St. Lucia.

Alexander said “force” must be used in accordance with the law and that aggression was needed to deal with criminality.

“We support the aggressive action against those persons who continue to kill our citizens through their trafficking. They are killing the entire society with their nefarious activities which impact our youth.

“We are fed up. We want citizens to look like and act and appear to be the future leaders of tomorrow, not a whole heap of pipers walking around,” said Alexander, noting that Trinidad and Tobago is currently under a state of emergency.

He told the newspaper that he believes that the alliance with the US could help address the threats facing the country.

“It will strengthen us. And again, this alignment will create history in Trinidad and Tobago,” he said. (CMC)

Rise in gunshot victims seeking help

0

There is an increase in gunshot victims who are seeking help from the Social Empowerment Agency (SEA).

“That trend is on the rise. We have young men, 20 and bedridden, paralysed. Persons who would have got a gunshot which severed their backbone and they’re unable to walk, so they’re now living off the social services for life. Some approach the Social Empowerment Agency seeking to get a hospital bed, because you know when they lay in their normal bed, sores can arise,” said social worker Dionne Watson.

She reported that officials started to recognise the trend in 2024 when young men became disabled as a result of gunshot injury.

Watson said they were also seeing stabbing victims as well as individuals becoming amputees as a result of diabetes and uncontrolled diabetes at the agency.

Her comments were made during the Social Empowerment Agency (SEA) and the Carlisle Laboratories Limited Month Of The Disabled Health and Wellness Fair on the grounds of the agency, formerly the Disabilities Unit in Maxwelton, Lower Collymore Rock, St Michael.

Watson said having a caregiver was also vital for people with disabilities who needed assistance when family members were not present to administer care to the individual.

Additionally, she said they were overwhelmed on a daily basis trying to source wheelchairs to clients. However, she noted that some organisations like the Wheelchair Foundation assisted when the agency fell short.

Watson urged individuals to take a different path in life and avoid resorting to violence as both parties

could be severely impacted. She also pleaded with parents to lead their children on the right path “Find a different slate in life. It’s not all about anger and frustration and taking it out on another person. It’s about doing the right thing. The right thing doesn’t start as an adult, it starts from a child. Parents need to guide their children in the right way. If a child gets into a dispute at school, don’t tell them to retaliate . . . because sometimes these things get out of hand. Speak to your children from home and keep them on the right path. Do good, let good follow you, she said.

Social media firms asked to toughen up age checks for under-13s

0

Major technology companies have been asked to bring in more robust age checks for under-13s in the UK, similar to those currently in place for services designed for adults.

The platforms contacted by media regulator Ofcom and data watchdog the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) are Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok, YouTube, Roblox and X.

They have been told they should do more to make sure younger children are kept safe online.

Ofcom chief executive Dame Melanie Dawes said services were currently “failing to put children’s safety at the heart of their products”.

The companies have defended the safeguards they have in place, with YouTube owner Google saying it was surprised by Ofcom’s approach, urging it to focus on higher risk services instead.

But both regulators said the social media platforms needed to strengthen their commitment to stopping children under 13 from signing up.

“We’re not saying this is a completely blank sheet of paper they need to address, but they have not gone far enough,” Dame Melanie told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme.

She said she believed Google was “uncomfortable” with Ofcom’s call to action.

“It’s putting the spotlight on them and asking them to account for what they’re doing, not through a Silicon Valley press release but on the UK public’s terms.”

Currently, many platforms rely on people who sign up to self-report their own ages.

“As self-declaration is easily circumvented, this means underage children can easily access services that have not been designed for them,” the ICO said in an open letter to social media and video platforms.

Most social media platforms have a minimum age limit of 13, but Ofcom research suggests 86% of children aged 10-12 have their own social media profile.

Ofcom wants firms to use “highly-effective age checks,” which are currently only required by law for certain services which provide over-18 content, such as pornography.

Implementing similar methods for young children’s social media would require the big tech firms to voluntarily bring most robust measures in.

The ICO’s focus is on the handling of young children’s data.

“Where services have set a minimum age – such as 13 – they generally have no lawful basis for processing the personal data of children under that age on their service,” its letter, from chief executive Paul Arnold, said.

Technology secretary Liz Kendall said no platform would get a “free pass” when it came to protecting children and that Ofcom had her full support in holding the platforms to account.

“No company should need a court order to act responsibly to protect children,” she added.

YouTube said it was surprised by Ofcom’s “move away from a risk-based approach, particularly given that we routinely update them and other regulators on our industry-leading work on youth safety.

“We urge them to focus instead on high risk services that are failing to comply with the codes set out in the Online Safety Act.”

Meta said it had many of the suggestions from Ofcom already in place, “including using AI to detect users’ age based on their activity, and facial age estimation technology”.

The company, which owns Facebook and Instagram, added that bringing age verification for app stores would mean “parents and teens will only need to provide their personal information once.”

Snapchat reported it was testing age verification tools.

TikTok said it used “enhanced technologies” to help detect and remove underage accounts.

The company also claimed to be the only major platform to transparently publish the number of suspected under-13 accounts it removes – with over 90 million suspected under-13 accounts removed between October 2024 and September 2025.

Roblox said it has additional protections for under-13s and has released 140 new safety features in the past year, including “the introduction of new mandatory age checks that all players must complete in order to access chat features”.

A spokesperson added that they “look forward to demonstrating our efforts in our ongoing dialogue with Ofcom”.

X was contacted for comment by BBC News but did not respond.

Professor Amy Orben, digital mental health expert at Cambridge University, welcomed the regulators’ action – but added it must only be the beginning of stronger regulation.

“Safety must be built into products by design rather than treated as an afterthought, with regulators showing more strength in holding companies to account,” she said.

Social media analyst Matt Navarra said the “real risk” came from algorithms or recommendation systems, another aspect which Ofcom highlighted also needed to be addressed.

“Knowing a user is a child is step one,” he said, “but designing a platform that doesn’t exploit their attention is the next step – and that step is actually much harder”. (BBC News)
