FOR THE FIRST time, secondary schools will be competing in the Ministry of Education’s biennial choir competition.
Peripatetic teacher Anthony Sargeant said four secondary schools – Harrison College, Deighton Griffith, Lester Vaughan and Christ Church Foundation – had entered and would be competing in the finals at the Wildey Gymnasium on March 6.
Speaking at the second primary schools preliminary at Alexandra school yesterday, Sargeant said he was not worried about the number of secondary competitors as it was their first year.
However, he said he hoped to see more participation in coming competitions as secondary schools had dedicated music teachers.
As for the primary component, he said 30 schools had entered the competition and he had high hopes.
“I am encouraged by the number of primary schools entered this year, given it is a sports term. This morning we had two original songs, and one group sang a medley of old-time gospel. I am really heartened,” he said.
Sargeant said the purpose of the choir competition was to showcase some of the natural talent among Barbados’ youth and give them a chance to socialize.
